Ferry timetables, the bell a baker rings when the second batch is out, the tide table pinned inside a harbour office window, the last train that runs whether or not anyone is on it. I write about the schedules a town keeps without thinking, and about the people who keep them.
Now and then I also write about the small print of writing itself: the footnote, the pilcrow, the margin. These pages are set the way I like to read, with notes beside the text and the paragraphs numbered, so that a reader can point to the exact place where I went wrong.
A new essay appears on the first Sunday of each month and goes out the same morning as a letter. Shorter notes appear when they are ready.
Colophon
Set in Alegreya by Juan Pablo del Peral, in two inks: black for the text and vermilion for the rubrics, as scribes once marked where a text begins. No photographs, no trackers.
The letter
One letter, on the first Sunday of the month.
The new essay in full, two or three notes, and nothing else. No tracking pixels, no counting of opens, one click to leave.
